Playa La Roda
Gravel beach with sand patches in central Altea, sheltered by breakwaters that create calm waters. Blue flag status recognises its cleanliness; summer services include volleyball nets and lifeguards. Waterfront promenade with bars and restaurants completes the experience.
Playa La Roda runs along the seafront in the middle of Altea, right below the old town. It's a beach of pebbles and gravel, with occasional patches of sand, stretching roughly 1,400 metres with an average width of 20 metres. Breakwaters shelter much of the shoreline, keeping the water calm with little swell.
Facilities and access
The beach holds a Blue Flag, recognising the quality of its water and services. It has lifeguard cover in the high season, public toilets, showers, access for reduced mobility, and areas with loungers and umbrellas. The promenade running alongside it is lined with bars and restaurants, and there's a children's play area near the town end, making it a practical choice for families.
Because of its central location, La Roda tends to fill up over the summer, with occupancy regularly passing 70% during the busiest hours of the day. The beach sits between Altea's fishing harbour and the slope that rises toward the old town, so swimmers get a clear view of the blue-domed Church of Nuestra Señora del Consuelo from the water. Outside peak season, the promenade remains a good place for a quiet walk along the shore.
From here the coast continues north to smaller coves such as Mascarat, inside the Serra Gelada Natural Park, or you can stay in Altea itself and explore its streets.
