Museo Etnológico y Arqueológico
The first ethnology and archaeology museum in Marina Baixa, displaying objects from traditional life from the early 20th century. It features an almácera (oil mill) from the 18th century, functionally restored, that operated until the 1970s.
The Museo Etnológico y Arqueológico occupies a building in the old town of Callosa d'en Sarrià and brings together more than a hundred objects donated by local residents, used to reconstruct daily life in the area before loquat farming transformed the local economy from the 1960s onward.
What's on display
The permanent exhibition, titled "Nosotros que fuimos..." ("We who were..."), covers the town's traditional trades and occupations: a period kitchen, a classroom from the old village school and several rooms furnished as historic houses have all been recreated, alongside farming tools and equipment once used for the olive and honey harvests. The museum also holds a specialist library on the archaeological and ethnological heritage of the Marina Baixa.
The 18th-century oil mill
One of the centrepieces is an almàssera — a traditional oil mill — dating from the late 18th century, restored to its original layout and kept in use well into the 20th century. Seeing it alongside its original machinery gives a direct sense of how olive oil was produced in the area before mechanisation.
The visit pairs easily with the nearby Iglesia Arciprestal de San Juan Bautista and, just outside town, with the Río Algar and the Fuentes del Algar, the municipality's most-visited natural spots.
