A collection of artifacts spanning from the Neolithic to Roman times. Located in the Palacio de Altamira, connected to the ancient murallas, it reveals the layers of occupation and civilizations that shaped Elche.

The Museo Arqueológico e Histórico de Elche (MAHE) occupies the Palacio de Altamira, a 12th-century Almohad fortress later expanded in the 18th century with a manor house, next to the historic walls of Elche. The building was renovated in 2006 to house the museum, which traces the city's history from the Neolithic through to late antiquity. That renovation added the wing known as the Traspalacio, a new structure built alongside the historic palace that now holds most of the chronological route.

From La Alcudia to the present

The archaeological section is arranged across six rooms spanning roughly 4000 BCE through to the end of the Roman period, with particular weight given to La Alcudia, the Iberian and Roman settlement on which historic Elche was founded. Highlights include an Iberian pillar-stele and sculptures such as a bull and a sphinx, alongside a broad collection of decorated pottery that documents successive layers of occupation.

Visiting

The layout is designed for a general audience, with an interactive display that makes the chronological thread easy to follow without prior knowledge. The museum sits close to the Basílica de Santa María and the Palmeral, next to the Altamira bridge, making it easy to pair the visit with a walk through the municipal park's palm groves. It's worth setting aside a good hour to see the rooms without rushing, and it combines well with the nearby Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Elche or any other entry on a list of the province's best museums.

Frequently asked questions

Is the MAHE free to visit?

No, admission is ticketed, though discounts or free entry sometimes apply on specific dates worth checking before visiting.

Is the Lady of Elche displayed at this museum?

No, the original is held in Madrid; the MAHE displays its own finds from the La Alcudia site and other periods of the city's history, not that particular discovery.

How long does a visit take?

Around an hour and a half allows time to see all six rooms properly.
