Open in Google Maps

The Sierra de Aitana reaches 1,558 metres at its highest point, the highest ground in Alicante province, and it dominates the landscape of the whole Marina Baixa from the municipality of Confrides. It is a limestone massif marked by deep gorges and karst formations, with pine and mountain scrub that changes noticeably between the damper northern slope and the south side, facing the coast.

A natural viewpoint

Closeness to the sea is what makes the views from the summit special: on clear days you can pick out much of the Marina Baixa coastline and, depending on conditions, even the outlines of Ibiza and Mallorca on the horizon. That combination of altitude and proximity to the Mediterranean makes Aitana one of the most-visited ranges in the province's interior for hikers and mountain bikers. Its plant diversity has also made the range the subject of dedicated botanical walking routes, alongside the hiking and biking trails that cross it.

Routes and access

The Font de l'Arbre, on the northern slope, is one of the most common starting points for the climb to the summit, on a moderately difficult route. Aitana is also part of the classic traverse linking it to Puig Campana, another of the province's landmark peaks, for anyone after a mountain route spanning more than one day. On the same range, on the south side, are the climbing areas of Sella and the ruins of the Castell d'Alfofra, two more reasons to explore the massif beyond the summit climb itself.
