Sella — Marina Baixa (Alacant)

Traditional parish church on the slopes of Serra d'Aitana. An example of religious architecture in a small rural mountain municipality.

Open in Google Maps

The Iglesia de Santa Ana is Sella's parish church, standing on the main square and at the centre of village life since the 18th century, when the building seen today went up. Sella sits at 429 metres above sea level on the southern slope of the Sierra de Aitana, between the Sella and Amadorio rivers, and the church acts as a landmark visible from any of the roads into the village.

What to see

It is a plain example of religious architecture, fitting for a small rural mountain municipality, without the later additions or monumental scale of parish churches in larger towns across the Marina Baixa. Its value lies mainly in the setting it forms together with the main square of Sella, the village's traditional meeting point and the stage for its patron festivities. The plain stone and whitewashed masonry of the building stand out against the mountain backdrop, a feature shared with other parish churches across this inland stretch of the comarca.

A visit takes only a few minutes and usually fits into a longer walk around the old town, which also takes in the climb up to the Castell de Santa Bàrbara. For anyone staying in the area for the climbing in the Barranc de l'Arc, it makes a quick, free stop before or after a day on the rock, and a good example of how these inland villages pack their whole life into a small space.
