The Castillo de Polop tops a 239-metre hill above the town centre and is Muslim in origin, built in the early 12th century under the emirate of Denia. Its near-circular plan follows the shape of the summit, and it once held two small walled enclosures with stretches of masonry and rammed-earth wall; a cistern and a square tower still survive today.

From Islamic stronghold to Christian lordship

After Polop was taken by the troops of James I, the castle saw fighting during the revolts led by Al-Azraq, the last major medieval Muslim uprising in the area. In 1271 the king granted the town to the knight Beltrán de Belpuig, and the castle passed into Christian hands, gradually losing its military role over the following centuries. It's listed as a Bien de Interés Cultural, Spain's top heritage protection category.

The climb to the site is short but steep from the old town, and the summit looks out over the whole municipality, reaching the coast on clear days. It pairs naturally with the rest of the historic centre, starting with the neighbouring Plaza de los Chorros and its 221-spout fountain, and the Casa Museo Gabriel Miró, a short walk away. For more altitude, the Monte Ponoig massif west of town offers considerably more demanding hiking routes.
