Balcón del Mediterráneo (Mirador del Castillo)
The Balcony of the Mediterranean is a viewpoint with pentagonal shape built on a rocky cliff. Its white stone balustrade divides the Poniente and Levante beaches. On this spot stood the medieval castle that protected the coast from Barbary pirates.
The Balcón del Mediterráneo sits on the Cerro Canfali promontory, in the centre of Benidorm, where a castle once stood, built around 1320 and remodelled around 1650 to defend the coast against Barbary pirate raids. The fortification gradually lost its military role over the following centuries, and in the 19th century an early viewpoint was built where its main tower had stood.
The viewpoint dividing two beaches
The white stone balustrade, laid out in a pentagon, became a tourist attraction as early as the 20th century and is now one of the city's most recognisable symbols. From it, Levante beach opens up on one side and Poniente on the other, with the city's skyline — including InTempo — behind them. In the adjoining Plaza del Castillo, a small monument with four cannons recalls the promontory's original defensive role. Other watchtowers from the same era, such as the Torre de les Caletes, still stand along Benidorm's coastline, built for a similar purpose of watching the sea.
The viewpoint sits right in the city centre, next to the old town, and is freely open at any hour. Its central location means it tends to fill up at sunset, when the light over the bay is at its best; going early in the morning means fewer crowds. It pairs well with a walk up to the Cruz de Benidorm, high on the Serra Gelada, to compare both views of the city.
