The Iglesia de Santa María de los Ángeles serves a neighbourhood of Sant Joan d'Alacant, a separate municipality within the greater Alicante metropolitan area, a few kilometres north of the provincial capital. Unlike the region's historic churches, it is not a monumental building but a modern neighbourhood parish, with an explicit focus on accessibility and welcoming all kinds of visitors.

A farming town

Sant Joan d'Alacant's history goes back well beyond its present-day housing developments. After the Reconquest, in 1244, the town's mosque was purified and consecrated to Saint John the Baptist, who gave his name to both the municipality's main parish and the town itself. For centuries it was known as Sant Joan de l'Horta, a reference to its role as the core of Alicante's market-garden belt: as early as the 12th century, the Arab geographer al-Idrisi described the area as producing vines, almonds, carob, figs and esparto grass thanks to an irrigation system inherited from Roman and Muslim times. The name gradually shifted to Sant Joan d'Alacant as the huerta gave way to urban growth.

A place in the Santa Faz story

The town also holds its own place in the province's religious history: it was a priest born here, Pedro Mena, who brought back from Rome in the 15th century the relic now venerated at the Monasterio de la Santa Faz, a few kilometres away. The Iglesia de Santa María de los Ángeles has no part in that specific tradition, but it belongs to the same parish network of the diocese of Orihuela-Alicante as churches like the Co-Cathedral of San Nicolás in the city centre. Sant Joan d'Alacant still keeps municipal market gardens today as a reminder of that farming past, a contrast with the housing developments that now surround much of the town on every side.
