Ermita del Santísimo Cristo del Remedio
Hermitage located at Castell de Finestrat at the municipality's highest point with panoramic views. A site of local devotion integrated into the ancient castle complex.
The Ermita del Santísimo Cristo del Remedio sits atop the Castell de Finestrat, the highest point in the town of Finestrat, on the remains of an old Arab castle where records already mention a small church built after the Christian conquest. The current hermitage is much more recent: residents built it in 1924, so it passed its first century just a year or so ago.
The highest point in town
The site has gardens and viewpoints overlooking the whole of Finestrat's old town, with Puig Campana as a backdrop. Along with the nearby Iglesia de Sant Bartomeu, it's one of the town's two main religious landmarks, and the two are linked by a central moment in the patron saint festivities: the image of the Cristo del Remedio is carried in procession down from the hermitage to the parish church, one of the most emotional and widely attended events on the local festive calendar.
The climb up to the hermitage follows the old-town streets, past buildings that sit directly on the hill's bedrock. The surroundings are quiet outside festival days and make an informal viewpoint over the town and, on clear days, much of the Marina Baixa toward the coast.
