Museu Boca del Calvari
Municipal museum of Benidorm opened in 2015, housed in a glazed ground-floor building on the site of the first city hall, from 1916. It programmes temporary contemporary art exhibitions and displays on local history.
The Museu Boca del Calvari stands on the site of Benidorm's first town hall, a building that its owner, Gaspar Ortuño Orts, donated to the city in 1916 for municipal offices, on condition that the council maintain the Ortuño family tomb in the municipal cemetery. That building continued serving as the town hall until the mid-1970s, when the council moved to a new location.
The town council approved building a museum on the site in 2009. Demolition of the original building finished in early 2012, and construction of the new museum — glass-walled and single-storey — took the following twelve months; the building was completed in 2014 and the museum opened its doors to the public the year after, in 2015.
A space for contemporary work
Since opening, the Museu Boca del Calvari has run temporary exhibitions on contemporary art and the local history of Benidorm, a programme that has brought internationally recognised photographers and artists to the city, including Martin Parr. As a free municipal museum, it appears in the guide to free museums in Alicante and in the guide to the best museums in Alicante. It's a short walk from Parque de l'Aigüera, making it easy to combine with a walk through one of the city's central green spaces.
