Parc de l'Aigüera
Urban park of 5.7 hectares designed by Ricardo Bofill in 2004. It separates old Benidorm from new with broad walkways, flower gardens, fountains and tree-lined paths. It includes amphitheatres for concerts, a children's play area and outdoor fitness equipment.
Parque de l'Aigüera follows the course of an old ravine that once cut through central Benidorm, now channelled underground, and was designed by Catalan architect Ricardo Bofill in the late 1980s. It runs close to a kilometre long and up to 180 metres wide at its broadest points, adding up to roughly 120,000 square metres. Its linear layout separates the old town from the newer district built up during the city's tourism boom, starting by the town hall and running almost as far as the tram tracks.
Bofill's design mixes wide green areas with neoclassical-leaning details, a central promenade, and two open-air auditoriums that host much of Benidorm's cultural programme. The smaller one, dedicated to Óscar Esplá, seats 500; the larger Auditorio Julio Iglesias holds up to 4,000, with a bust honouring the singer.
A park in the city centre
Benidorm's bullring stands next to the park, and the whole area is a short walk from the Museu Boca del Calvari and the Iglesia de San Jaime y Santa Ana, right in the old quarter. It's one of the most-used green spaces for anyone staying in the city centre and features in the guide to parks and gardens in Alicante.
