Elda — Vinalopó Mitjà (Alacant)

Cultural heritage site on the foothills of Sierra de la Torreta. One of the most significant Iberian-Roman sites in Elda's historical patrimony, along the Vinalopó river.

Open in Google Maps

El Monastil sits on a spur of the sierra de la Torreta on the outskirts of Elda, bordered by the Vinalopó river. It is one of the longest continuously occupied sites in the province: remains include a Chalcolithic and Bronze Age settlement, followed by an Iberian oppidum that, under Roman rule, grew into a fortified settlement controlling one of the natural routes between the Mediterranean coast and the Meseta. Some researchers identify the site with the mansio of Ad Ello, a stop named in the Antonine Itinerary.

From Ibero-Roman settlement to Visigothic church

Occupation continued into late antiquity, when a church was built over the earlier structures. Dated to the 6th-7th centuries and restored in 2008, it keeps a horseshoe-shaped apse and a baptismal font, and ranks among the oldest religious buildings still standing in the Comunitat Valenciana. According to researchers who have worked on the site, the name El Monastil comes from this basilica's later reuse as a monastery, before the Islamic conquest.

Visitors today can walk past the remains of the defensive walls, the streets and houses of the Ibero-Roman settlement, storage areas and pottery workshops, as well as the early medieval church enclosure. Much of the valley lies in view from the promontory, which helps explain the site's strategic value throughout all these periods. The site is a listed cultural heritage asset (Bien de Interés Cultural), and visits are organised in guided groups through Elda's town hall.

It rounds out Elda's heritage offering alongside the Iglesia de Santa Ana, and fits with other hilltop fortifications in the district such as the Castillo de Petrer or the Castillo de La Mola in Novelda, all strategic points overlooking the Vinalopó valley.
